Music of the Night pone voz y sentimiento a los anhelos del fantasma de la ópera por atraer hacia sí a la joven cantante Christine.

La canción la interpreta el fantasma en un momento en el que, tras secuestrar a Christine y llevarla hasta su refugio en los túneles debajo del teatro, consigue que ésta quede absorta por la magia del lugar que se presenta ante sus ojos. La frase final del tema (Ayúdame a hacer la música de la oscuridad)  resume todo el contenido de una poesía escrita para alejar a la joven de la luz y atraerla hacia la tinieblas.
